Despite the great progress in capability of computer, the current level of technology for
computer vision is far from the satisfaction. It is because the computational algorithms are so
complicated that they need tremendous processing time to complete a given task. Thus, the
application of computer vision to date has been circumscribed to some limited situations.
Researchers now have reached in agreement that, without new perspective, any simple effort to
implement the current knowledge of computer vision into engineering devices will eventually fail.
For these problems, it might be a solution to adopt the principles of the biological vision system.
The biological vision system performs the visual tasks far better than any artificial system now
available in efficiency, speed and accuracy. Furthermore it has a flexibility in using a
goal-dependent "functional units" by varying their functional characteristics and selecting which
one will be optimal for the given task. |

This workshop on biologically motivated computer vision aims to flourish the debates on biologically based system in the area of computer vision research and to provide a chance for exchanging their outstanding contributions between the researchers in different disciplines. |
